Ontario and Quebec will experience dangerously high temperatures and humidity this week, with daytime highs in the lower to middle 30s and humidex values reaching the mid-40s in areas such as the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Ottawa, and Montreal.
This extreme heat, driven by a strong ridge of high pressure and humid winds from the Gulf of Mexico, will peak from Tuesday to Thursday, potentially breaking records.
The heatwave increases the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, those without air conditioning, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and seek air-conditioned environments.
The stagnant, humid air will also negatively impact air quality. Scattered thunderstorms may provide brief relief but won’t significantly reduce the overall heat. Community cooling centers are recommended for those needing respite from the heat.
