Although Canada is known around the world as a friendly and welcoming place, recent research has now provided evidence to support this perception.

Toronto, Canada, has been named the friendliest city in the world, according to new data by Preply, an online language learning platform. Preply developed the Community Spirit Index, a ranking of 53 cities worldwide based on their friendliness to non-natives, considering six “friendly metrics.”

The factors include friendly staff, visitor return rate, community respect, acceptance of diversity, happiness and well-being, and ease of communication through a common language. Toronto shares the top spot with Sydney, Australia, having a visitor return rate of 15% and a high GBTQ+ quality score of 90 out of 100. The city also received a happiness score of 7.03 out of 10.

The only other Canadian city to make the top 20 list was Montreal.
